Transcribing audio for Resolve videos with Audacity and OpenVINO
Transcript generation in Resolve is a very nice recent feature addition. However, Resolve only supports a very limited number of languages. In this video I explore the workflow for generating transcripts in the Audacity DAW using the OpenVINO plugin. OpenVINO uses the Whisper language models (by OpenAI). Whisper (and hence the OpenVINO plugin) supports almost 100 languages at the time of writing, for a list of some of those, check out the video.
With the new .srt file import feature in Resolve 19, it is possible to import the .srt files generated in Audacity and you can then edit and finalize the video and the transcripts in Resolve.
In addition to generating a transcript, you can also generate a translated transcript. At this time you can only translate into English, not into any other language. I tested this with Finnish and was positively surprised by the quality of the translation. Yes, things to edit but still very useful!
Turn on subtitles if you want to evaluate the quality of the transcripts created with OpenVINO. The subtitles for the language "English" were made with the large-v3 model. I have made no edits except delete a few stutters at the very end of the video. For my videos, the result is better than the transcripts generated with Resolve (choose subtitle language "English - Australia for the unedited Resolve version) and a lot better than those auto-generated by UA-cam (you can also choose those to compare).

Wooden yachts galore: Viaporin Tuoppi 2014

This annual event draws a large part of the Finnish wooden sailing boat fleet to Helsinki for a race and wooden boat event like no other in Finland. I've never really been a great fan of Log400, I mainly us the Flat profile, but as it seemed that there might have been some changes in Log400 processing in the Ninja with the new OS, I took a deep dive into Log400 and how to grade it on Resolve. What’s your thoughts on wood fired stoves vs electric?

    • @SailInFinland
      @SailInFinland 27 днів тому

      @@NPow94 This is an eternal debate here in Finland 🤔. So let's define our goal, to me the goal is a nice sauna experience. The stove is just a (smallish?) part of the overall experience. Sauna design, location, facilities etc are all important as well. So it's possible to have a bad sauna (experience) with a wood-heated stove and a great experience with an electric. Both have their use. But if there is a well-designed sauna, by the water, with a nice view and nature all around, then I would definitely want a wood-heated stovev in *that* sauna. But for the sauna where I play badminton, I would definitely want to have an electric stove for reliable, instant löyly. So both have great uses and can offer a great sauna experience in the right setting. But for ultimate experience, nothing beats the wooden sauna when everything else around are contributing as well.

    Interesting! In the early seventies I sailed with one of the brothers Kahm, the then owners of Andromeda from Stockholm to Öland and back. Incredible yourney and sometimes a handful as we at times were only two on board and with no engine at that time. Sailing in and out of harbour at Byxelkrok, for instance, was interesting...Great sailing, no one could keep up with us.. One night we glided in to a natural harbour on the east coast, south of Arkösund, where we found the boat " Gullmar VI " anchored in the bay. On board was, of course its owner, Arvid Laurin, the designer of Andromeda, at the time named " Mirage" and painted red. We invited Laurin on board and he entertained us with lots of stories from his days as designer and sailor. He checked the boat over and seemed reasonably satisfied with the condition . Gave us a few tips as to trimming the rigging a little, a little astouded, that the original rig was still ok. S 23 won the 8-metre championships later that summer, att Visby

    Larger microphones have more surface area, which means more impact of the wind gusts. So in general smaller mics have an advantage at extremely windy conditions. I also have Deity D4 and tested it at 10 m/s wind. Results are unsatisfactory. That's probably over deadcat's capability.

      I'm thinking that the problem is (at least partly) due to the foam, seems like the foam is stopping the deadcat to fully "seal" the mic from the behind? Also, as the general wind noise (from mainly trees around/behind me in the video) creates interference noise from the barrel?

    • @SailInFinland

      In general birch, pine and fir are considered "quality" wood. Personally I think that any wood that is chopped (ie not small branches, sticks etc) and well dried after felling will work very well. If the wood feels very light and "papery" then it has probably been outside rotting for too long and will not work very well.

    Hi there, I like your two videos on sauna history and user guide. I would like to hear your opinion on wood fired saunas compared to electric heated saunas. One word that often comes up is "lämpömassa" and that you can't achieve this with electric heating. And I don't understand it. Doing sauna the way i want (temperature, music, talking) and enjoy is the biggest reason I'm looking to build my own sauna at home. Greetings from Germany.

    • @SailInFinland
      @SailInFinland 10 місяців тому

      Hi, interesting question! While "lämpömassa" definitely is a Finnish word, it also is not a word used in Finland (at least not widely). So it seems to be a termed coined more for its interesting pronunciation and looks :-). However, acknowledging that there is quite a wide scope in terms of sauna preferences (and that is perfectly OK, there is no "right way" to enjoy sauna), most Finns would agree that a "soft and long" löyly is one of the keys to a great experience and this seems to be what lämpömassa refers to? Soft here meaning "not too hot" and "long" meaning that the volume of steam produced is quite high. As for the choice between electric and wood heated, it is not very straight forward. A good sauna consists of many components, like a good sauna room design (big enough but not too big for the stove), ventilation, placement of the stove and benches etc. Also how you heat it, will effect how it feels. And things also come down to taste; for instance personally I like a cooler sauna than some people (and would definitely not join any sauna "competition" - where the winner stays the longest in the hottest sauna). So now talking about personal preference, perhaps the best possible sauna experience in my view comes from a "single heated" (kertalämmitteinen), wood heated sauna with a large mass of stones These will produce (at least after a little use) lots but perhaps a bit cooler steam which I find perfect. Also performance will not vary very quickly. However, the downside of this is that heating takes time and you kind of overdo it if only a few people will take the sauna (the sauna stays hot for quite a while). So the second best would then be a wood heated, continuous heating sauna (like the one in the videos), which with good design produces almost the same experience. This requires that there is a reasonably good volume of stones so that you don't need to "overheat" in order to get a löyly. The good point here is that the pre-work is quite short (30 - 60 min) and you don't overspend on wood/effort even if only a few people will take the sauna. The downsides are mainly that you need to keep the fire going and the experience will most likely wary somewhat depending on how intesely you monitor the fire. Having said this, electric saunas can be reasonably good, the main problem here is that the electric sauna design is often just horrible: a very small löyly room (in apartments), bad (or no) ventilation and often overheated stones that give a "sharp and short" löyly (the opposite of "lämpömassa"). Not to mention the infrared stuff which in my view should never be called a sauna. Ever! The one difference often mentioned between wood heated and electric saunas is the different ionization of the air (don't ask me for details). So in the end, a well design electric sauna in my view gets' quite close to a wood heated one. And in the marinas, they often are well-design and I can definitely recommend that you use saunas always when having access to one in the marinas (mostly the sauna in this case is included in the harbor fee and can be found together with the showers!

      Hi Tim, in my Opinion (not Finnish) I'd say that an electric oven is simpler to operate and you can control the temperature better. Also you don't have the smell of the fire, which sometimes can interfere with the smell of some essential oils, when you steam up. On the other Hand the woodfire oven has this unique smell and feeling of a real fire. I handle it that way, if I'm back from work and more or less exhausted, I use the electric oven. On the other Hand, if there is time, my wife an I do the full round with the wood fired one.

      @@vonrheinland4924 Thanks for your reply. I will go with an electric oven (I like the IKI 15kW Mesh heaters) and for the wood fire crackling I will build an wood fired brick oven for cooking outside.

    You solved a big problem I was having. I was trying to use my Canon EOS R with an Atomos NJV and I ran into the same DC port issue but didn’t know what to do about it. The second I saw you could power both the camera and the monitor by powering the monitor through d tap I bought a DC to DTap cable. Thank you for your research man.

      You have been heard! Thanks for the feedback, the auto generated subtitles really were bad. So I created an updated set which - hopefully - are a bit better. If you find and errors, let me know, fortunately the subtitles can be uploaded and edited as needed!

    What about recording time? Can you go longer than 30 minutes this way?

    • @SailInFinland
      @SailInFinland 11 місяців тому

      Yes, as long as the Atomos and camera have power (I use a powerbank when not connected to mains) and there is space on the Atomos SSD. I record H.265 and on an empty 1T SSD I seem to remember I get about 40 (!) hours.
